For a moment, Facebook Standards allowed death threats against those accused or convicted of sex offenses

For a moment, Facebook formally acknowledged a policy they have followed informally for years. They have allowed vigilante groups targeting registered persons to operate on FB and harass and threaten them in violation of a number of state laws, like No Peace For Predators or Truckers Against Pedophiles. Even law enforcement agencies have used Facebook pages to harass registrants.

Of course, Facebook backpedalled not long after the story broke. So now they will just go back to ignoring the reports of death threats against registered persons informally as they have done already.

Facebook updates standards to allow death threats against alleged sexual offenders

Facebook updated its community standards to allow for users to call for "high-severity violence" against sexual offenders, including death threats.

In its " Do not post" section on its website, Facebook changed its standards in a July update to allow an exception to its "Violence and Incitement" standard for individuals "described as having carried out violent crimes or sexual offenses, wherein criminal/predator status has been established by media reports, market knowledge of news event, etc."

The exception allows users to make: "Threats that could lead to death" against alleged violent and sexual offenders. Facebook does not require for the threats to be against persons who have been convicted under criminal law.

Facebook did not return the Washington Examiner's request for comment at the time of publication. In May, the company said: “We’ve always banned individuals or organizations that promote or engage in violence and hate, regardless of ideology."

"The process for evaluating potential violators is extensive, and it is what led us to our decision to remove these accounts," the Facebook spokesperson added.

The standards change by Facebook comes as federal prosecutors charge financier Jeffrey Epstein with sex trafficking and conspiracy.

Southern District of New York prosecutors said Epstein “enticed and recruited, and caused to be enticed and recruited, minor girls" as young as 14 in order to "engage in sex acts with him."

UPDATE:

"We don’t allow credible threats of violence against anyone. We do allow some speech that calls for certain forms of violence, such as calls for the death penalty for criminals or support for military action against terrorists. We have updated our Community Standards to be more clear about this," Facebook spokesperson said in a statement to the Washington Examiner.

Facebook updated their community standards again saying the language they added earlier in July was "imprecise."

"The language we previously used to describe our policies against violence and incitement was imprecise. We have since replaced it to more clearly explain the policy and underlying rationale," the Facebook said in an update to their "Violence and Incitement" community standards.

"In some cases, we see aspirational or conditional threats directed at terrorists and other violent actors (e.g. Terrorists deserve to be killed), and we deem those non credible absent specific evidence to the contrary," the company said.

Man Gets Killed by Mob over car theft with Kids

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police identified 54-year-old Eric Hood as the man killed after a crowd kicked and punched him when they learned he stole a car with three children inside.

The theft happened at approximately 9:50 p.m. Thursday near 29th and Dauphin streets in Strawberry Mansion.

According to police, a mother was traveling with her three kids when she stopped to visit the father of two of her children at a pizza shop, leaving the car running with the children inside.

According to police, both the mother and father ran after the car and pulled Hood out of the driver's seat.

Philadelphia Police Homicide Captain Jason Smith says the father and Hood got into an altercation.

"Hood managed to break free from the father and fled across 29th Street. It was at this time that a crowd of individuals stopped Mr. Hood and forced him to the ground," Smith said. "The crowd kicked and punched Mr. Hood until the arrival of responding police. At some point Mr. Hood became unresponsive."

Police are reviewing video posted on Instagram and surveillance video from the scene to see exactly how large the crowd was and they are working to identify the people who took part in the beating.

"The video is very clear," Smith said. He then urged the people involved to come forward.

"I think it's a much better idea to make contact with us then us with them," he said.

The Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine Hood's cause of death and run tests to see if he had drugs in his system.

Hood had a lengthy arrest record with 24 arrests - the last one dated in 2007.

The mother of the kids left in the vehicle could also face charges for leaving them in a running car.

Police say the parents have cooperated and were questioned by detectives then released.

  2. You Gotta understand other things at play here such as facebook has to cave into pressure to have this recent death policy IE the Metoo movement and Creep Catchers put pressure on facebook to allow this policy to happen.

But in the UK this happened.

A GANG of online paedophile hunters have appeared in court accused of abducting a man and threatening to kill him.

Five members of the Wolf Pack Hunters UK group are alleged to have attacked Stuart McInroy during an incident at Edinburgh bus station last year.

The gang are said to have repeatedly punched Mr McInroy to the head and body before head-butting him.

The five-strong group are then said to have repeatedly made threats to kill the man while recording the alleged attack on a mobile phone.

Karen Ferry, from Mayfield, Marcin Kuciak, from Edinburgh, Jay Sharkey and Gordon Buchan, both from Glasgow and William Brown, from Stranraer, all pleaded not guilty to the charges when they appeared in the dock at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday.

All five are said to have joined in the violent attack on Mr McInroy while Ferry, 48, is alleged to have filmed the incident on her phone during the incident on September 27 last year.

Ferry is also alleged to have breached a court order banning her from taking part in Wolf Pack activities when she was caught at Mr McInroy’s home in Fife earlier this year.

Brown, 40, is alleged to have committed two road traffic offences while Sharkey, 18, is facing a charge of breaching a home curfew by being outwith his home between 7pm and 7am on November 9 last year.

All five members of the Wolf Pack Hunters UK denied the allegations against them during yesterday’s hearing and a trial has been set down for September.

And there have been cases in South Africa where men have killed somebody they heard was a rapist. Now it becomes a debate on "Blame the Hero"

A man was allegedly burnt to death when two houses were torched in a mob justice attack which was carried out after a woman was allegedly gang raped in Vereeniging.

The man, who has not been identified, was allegedly set alight inside one of the houses after he and two other men allegedly raped the woman on Sunday night. The other two men managed to flee.

Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda said the attack happened after the woman managed to escape and call for help.

"A group of about 10 to 13 men arrived at the house where the woman claimed to be have been raped at. They looked for the suspects and could not find them. The mob then proceeded to another house situated near the first house, where it was claimed that the three suspects were hiding.

"They then torched the house and the other house where the alleged rape took place. Inside one of the torched houses, a man was burnt to death beyond recognition," said Funda.

Police are investigating cases of rape, murder and arson.

Funda said one person was taken in for questioning in relation to the torchings.

Now a Cop detained on murder allegations is under investigation on Jeffrey Epstein

Speculation that accused child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein may have been assaulted in his Manhattan jail cell by a former Briarcliff Manor police officer awaiting trial in a quadruple homicide is false, the lawyer for ex-cop Nicholas Tartaglione said Thursday afternoon.

"Any suggestion that Mr. Tartaglione assaulted anyone is a complete fabrication," the lawyer, Bruce Barket, said in a statement. "This story is being leaked to retaliate against Mr. Tartaglione for complaining to the court about the deplorable conditions at the MCC. We made those complaints on Monday in open court. We warned the judge that officials at the jail would retaliate against Nick because we have been exposing the inhumane conditions at the facility.”

Epstein, a wealthy financier, has been held at the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center since his arrest July 6. He was found this week in his cell, lying in a fetal position, semi-conscious, with marks on his neck, wnbcnewyork.com reported Wednesday night.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that Epstein might have tried to hang himself, or that it might have been a ruse to try to get transferred, according to NBC, which also reported Epstein is on suicide watch.
Investigators talked to Tartaglione, who is the same unit at MCC, as they also look into the possibility that Epstein might have been assaulted, NBC reported.

Epstein, 66, was treated and, according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, remains in custody at MCC. Jail records obtained by The Associated Press show no indication he was taken to a hospital.

In a statement, the bureau gave no other details and would not comment on Epstein’s condition. An Epstein lawyer had no immediate response.

Epstein has been accused of sexually abusing dozens of underage girls in the early 2000s. He was indicted on federal charges in New York this month more than a decade after he secretly struck a deal with federal prosecutors in Florida to dispose of similar charges of large-scale sex trafficking. He pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting a minor for prostitution and served 13 months behind bars.

A judge denied him bail last week, ruling that he might flee the country if released. The judge also said Epstein is a danger to the public because of his “uncontrollable” urges to engage in sexual conduct with underage girls.

Barket told NBC that Tartaglione and Epstein get along well. He said the two men have been complaining about rodents, flooding, and food in the jail.

Tartaglione has been complaining about the conditions for more than two years. It got so bad this year that U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas intervened and requested updates from officials at the prison about efforts to make improvements. Last month, the situation seemed to have improved, Barket said, but he told Karas Monday that the situation had worsened.

Tartaglione made headlines recently after correction officers confiscated an illicit cell phone that was found in his cell on July 3, according to court records. He claimed his cellmate had tossed it to him as correction officers approached the cell, prosecutors said.

Tartaglione was assaulted at MCC in 2018, when he was hospitalized for two weeks for surgery to repair a fractured eye socket bone, Barket said at the time.

Tartaglione is facing the death penalty in the killing in the killing of four men — Martin Luna, Miguel Luna, Urbano Santiago, and Hector Gutierrez — who were found buried in December 2016 on property that Tartaglione had previously rented in Otisville, in Orange County.

  9. https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/09/tech/white-house-social-media-executive-order-fcc-ftc/index.html

Washington (CNN Business)A draft executive order from the White House could put the Federal Communications Commission in charge of shaping how Facebook (FB), Twitter (TWTR) and other large tech companies curate what appears on their websites, according to multiple people familiar with the matter.
The draft order, a summary of which was obtained by CNN, calls for the FCC to develop new regulations clarifying how and when the law protects social media websites when they decide to remove or suppress content on their platforms. Although still in its early stages and subject to change, the Trump administration's draft order also calls for the Federal Trade Commission to take those new policies into account when it investigates or files lawsuits against misbehaving companies.
If put into effect, the order would reflect a significant escalation by President Trump in his frequent attacks against social media companies over an alleged but unproven systemic bias against conservatives by technology platforms. And it could lead to a significant reinterpretation of a law that, its authors have insisted, was meant to give tech companies broad freedom to handle content as they see fit.
Why Washington has turned on Big Tech
Why Washington has turned on Big Tech
A White House spokesperson declined to comment on the draft order, but referred CNN to Trump's remarks at a recent meeting with right-wing social media activists. During the meeting, Trump vowed to "explore all regulatory and legislative solutions to protect free speech."

According to the summary seen by CNN, the draft executive order currently carries the title "Protecting Americans from Online Censorship." It claims that the White House has received more than 15,000 anecdotal complaints of social media platforms censoring American political discourse, the summary indicates. The Trump administration, in the draft order, will offer to share the complaints it's received with the FTC.
In May, the White House launched a website inviting consumers to report complaints of alleged partisan bias by social media companies.
The FTC will also be asked to open a public complaint docket, according to the summary, and to work with the FCC to develop a report investigating how tech companies curate their platforms and whether they do so in neutral ways. Companies whose monthly user base accounts for one-eighth of the U.S. population or more could find themselves facing scrutiny, the summary said, including but not limited to Facebook, Google, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and Snapchat.
The Trump administration's proposal seeks to significantly narrow the protections afforded to companies under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, a part of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Under the current law, internet companies are not liable for most of the content that their users or other third parties post on their platforms. Tech platforms also qualify for broad legal immunity when they take down objectionable content, at least when they are acting "in good faith." From the start, the legislation has been interpreted to give tech companies the benefit of the doubt.

Now A Utah teen gets 30 days in Jail for death of a homeless man.

A Logan, Utah, teen who fatally shoved an elderly former Southeast Idaho man to the ground in April because he believed his sister had been sexually assaulted by him was recently ordered to serve 30 days in juvenile detention.

The victim, 62-year-old Michael Fife, struck his head and later died of his injuries, and the teen was charged with homicide by assault, a third-degree felony.

“The judge gave him the maximum that she could, given his lack of criminal history, and that was 30 days,” defense attorney Dave Perry said.

During his disposition hearing, the youth said the entire incident is “destroying him on the inside.”

He read a letter of apology to Fife’s family, in which he let them know he didn’t take Fife’s death lightly.

“This has taken a toll over me and put me in a numb feeling where I can’t do anything but think about what has happened,” he said. “I have been seeing that what I chose to do wasn’t the best option to approach the situation, and now I have to live with the consequences of what I have done.”

In a victim impact statement, Fife’s son said his father was a man with “a big heart and an angry soul,” and his death leaves a significant void in the family.

“I don’t see how the damage can be repaired,” he reportedly wrote in the statement.

Fife was born in Gallup, New Mexico, was abandoned as an infant and lived in an orphanage for several years. Then he was adopted by a couple in St. Charles, Idaho, which is about 105 miles south of Pocatello near Bear Lake and the borders of Wyoming and Utah. He was raised there.

According to records filed in 1st District Court, the 17-year-old went looking for Fife on April 23 after receiving a call from his sister, who allegedly said Fife touched her inappropriately while she was a passenger on a Cache Valley Transit District bus.

Police say they reviewed video footage both from the bus and from the Logan High School area where the incident occurred.

Based on those videos, they were able to determine that the allegations against Fife were false.

They were also able to see the girl’s brother get out of a vehicle, run at Fife and push him to the ground before running off.

Fife was initially transported to Logan Regional Hospital for evaluation, where medical professionals found he had a fractured skull with bleeding and swelling in his brain, reportedly caused by the assault.

Fife was later transferred to McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden and died April 27.

According to Perry, Fife’s blood alcohol content at the time of the incident was .24, and medical professionals reportedly told him that Fife might not have died if not for the effects of chronic alcoholism on the body.

The female juvenile also faced consequences for the events leading up to Fife’s death. However due to her age and the lower level of offense, that information is not public information.
